What is NON-GMO?: Eating NON-GMO with MIC Food

October is #NonGMOMonth! As food trends, farming, and technology evolves, it’s important to stay knowledgeable and up to date with the tendencies of food that we consume. Read on to find out more about GMOS, the meaning of NON-GMO, and how MIC Food has made the stride to keep genetically modified organisms out of their products.

What is a GMO?

A GMO is a genetically modified organism whose genetic makeup has been manipulated in a laboratory. A GMO can be a plant, animal, or any other organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This process creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Most GMOs have been engineered to withstand the direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Because of this, the use of toxic herbicides has increased since GMOs were first introduced. There is no evidence that any of the GMOs currently on the market offer high yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Additionally, there are no credible, long-term studies investigating potential effects of GMO food on human health.

What does NON-GMO mean?

The Non-GMO Project works diligently to provide the most accurate, up-to-date standards for non-GMO verification. For a product to be Non-GMO Project Verified, it must be evaluated for compliance with their standards, which categorizes inputs into three risk levels.
